The Saguaro, Palm Springs

Whether you come for the sun, the air, the spas, the style or the natural beauty, there's an undeniable appeal to this oasis of desert modern in the Coachella Valley.

Now there's a new place to lay your head while soaking it all up. The Saguaro opens in February 2012, bringing with it elevated design, delicious food and simple comfort. If you ever needed another reason to escape here, you have one now.

Bright. Light. Colorful. The rooms at the Saguaro immerse you in the desert resort experience that is Palm Springs. Choose your view — mountain, garden courtyard with pool, or city lights. Nearly every room has a balcony or patio and is accented inside and out by the brilliant color of a native Mojave wildflower, creating a visual spectrum of light throughout the grounds. No one perspective is the same.

Guestrooms offer at least 275 square feet of living space and include sitting areas, work stations, hand-crafted, imported Mexican furniture, as well as luxury bath products and linens. The brilliant, desert-inspired color scheme is shared by your indoor and outdoor space and adds to your experience. Feel free to request a color depending on your mood.

There are certain standards by which a visit to Palm Springs is judged. Such as pool time and the scenery that goes with it, the quality of architecture and design, and perhaps most importantly, the ability to enjoy the desert landscape and air, preferably with cocktail in hand. By all accounts, the Saguaro has you more than covered.

A touch of old Hollywood glamour. Perhaps the best golf and spas in the west. Groundbreaking mid-century modern architecture. A party circuit unrivaled for its inclusiveness. There is only one Palm Springs, that's for sure. The Saguaro puts you right in the middle of it, just off famed Palm Canyon Drive a mile from downtown. Yet, in true Palm Springs fashion, a stay here is also about privacy and relaxation.

El Jefe is a cool celebration of the culture and cuisine of Mexico City, with a menu focused on the cuisine of what is known by locals as the "Distrito Federal.” With a premium tequila bar and lounge seating, El Jefe is a muted backdrop for Chef Garces' modern Mexican small plates.

Chef

He’s one of the country’s most talented young chefs, winner of the Food Network’s Iron Chef America and a James Beard award. His food draws crowds in Philly, Chi-Town, Scottsdale, and now Palm Springs.

Hotel Bel-Air, Los Angeles

Nestled on 12 acres in the Bel-Air Estates neighborhood of Los Angeles, the iconic Hotel Bel-Air is one of the most beautiful, romantic, and exclusive hotels in the world. Just opened after a two year transformation, this Spanish mission-style urban oasis wins a never-ending stream of praise for its faultless service, luxurious accommodations, and magical ambiance.

All newly renovated rooms and suites feature a new generation of design aesthetic and is reflected through different design themes from the glamorous decades of the 1930s, 40s and 50s conveyed in a fresh, youthful and elegant manner.

The famous restaurant, bar, catering and in-room dining services are managed by world-renowned Master Chef Wolfgang Puck with a menu featuring modern California cuisine with European and Mediterranean influences in a spectacular garden setting.

ROOMS & SUITES

Surrounded by 12 acres of lush gardens Hotel Bel-Air has 58 guestrooms and 45 suites, including 7 one of a kind specialty suites.

The incredible re-design of Hotel Bel-Air by the famed interior designer Alexandra Champalimaud was inspired by 1930's, 1940's and 1950's Hollywood, a period of Southern Californian residential architecture and design that produced an all American style evoking glamour and graceful living with international flair.

The Bel-Air’s design has always mixed the influences of Spanish colonial, layered with the smooth finishes and graceful shapes of French Deco, the last word in fashion of the time. The style that emerged was young, fun, fresh and elegant. Stone floors in limestone and polished marble, smooth, pale plaster walls, natural wood ceilings and rich finishes and textures with bold strokes of color in furnishings were melded to create a confident style that complements the glorious garden atmosphere.

Dekalb Market, Brooklyn, New York

The new Dekalb Market has made everything shipshape in downtown Brooklyn. Twenty-two salvaged shipping containers chopped, welded, and painted in rainbow hues now house boutiques selling everything from vintage rompers and 1970s eyewear to Holstee recycled wallets and Alder printed silk scarves by local Pratt Institute design students.

Work up an appetite grooving to tracks spun by the hip-hop heads behind Bbeats, the market's record shop, and then sample everything from veggie muffulettas to mod Filipino fare in the mini restaurants. An urban farm and a beer garden are also on site. Fertile ground for a weekend outing? We think so.

Avalon Hotel - Göteborg, Sweden

Design exhibitions can be a bit frustrating, especially when the works on show—say, an Eames lounge chair just pleading to be sat on—are behind glass. But now that the fashion-, design-, and decorative arts–focused Röhsska Museum has paired up with Sweden's Avalon Hotel, you can look, touch, and swivel with verve.

In conjunction with the museum's Past-Present-Future exhibition (through September 30), design covetables from the collection have been replicated in the hotel's public areas and key guest rooms. Our faves include a tangerine Verner Panton Cone chair, a classic of late 1950s Scandinavian modernism; the full-size Horse lamp and Pig tray tables, quirks of design stars Moooi; and a DVD of Swedish FRONT design group's Blow Away Vase, showing in the elevators. Free workshops and design tours are offered for the truly obsessed. How novel: design that's actually within reach—at least for a night

The hotel with its 101 rooms and 202 beds form the basis of our offering. It is here that much of what creates the Avalon experience is to be found. The architecture and the location create an impression to a high degree. We are a feng-shui certified hotel where furnishing, lighting, fragrance and sounds play a large role. We see it as a matter of course that good food and drink are part of good hotel service. Avalon Hotel offer a full service in the hotels own garage.

Eccleston Square: a new ultra-modern hideaway in the heart of London

Eccleston Square Hotel will be opening in July 2011.

When guests arrive at Eccleston Square Hotel, an historic townhouse on an award- winning garden square in Pimlico, Central London, they might think they’re about to step into an old-fashioned city residence. But instead they will be entering a timeless modern lobby, which dazzles with a black, crystal chandelier and herring bone pattern floor tiles.

After a £6.5m renovation, this Georgian town house has emerged as an ultra-high-tech urban cocoon, where guests are comforted and soothed by luxurious products and swathes of futuristic gadgets. In all 39 rooms there are blue tooth iPod connections, VoIP phones and programmable ‘wake up and sleep’ experience that takes control of the curtains, heating and lighting. The 46-inch 3D TVs with 3D Blu-Ray players and hand-made, electronically adjustable Hästens beds are standard in all rooms.

Good sleep and wellbeing are central to the design concept devised by Olivia Byrne, who recently completed a four-and-a-half-year course at the esteemed Ecole Hotelière de Lausanne in Switzerland. “The ethos of the Eccleston Square Hotel is quite simple,” she said. “We want our clients to leave the hotel feeling better than they did when they arrived.”

Eccleston Square Hotel is an ultra-modern hideaway in the heart of Central London. With cutting-edge gadgets in every room, it’s the perfect place for guests to relax and recharge.

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami

Putting on the Ritz is generally a pricey proposition. But on June 10, ten lucky travelers will be able to reserve a room at the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne for a mere tenner. That's right, for less than the cover charge at your average Miami club, you could be curled up beneath Frette linens, soaking in a marble bath, or lounging by one of two oceanfront pools.

Interested? The offer—to celebrate the resort's tenth anniversary—is available for stays on July 5–7, 10–13, 18, and 25–26. If you want to keep the $10 theme going while you're there, try a $10 spa treatment, enjoy a $10 three-course dinner in the resort's Italian restaurant, or toast your good luck with a $10 bottle of Champagne.

Have your phone at the ready at 10 am ET on June 10, because the bargain rates are first-come, first-served. The all-important number to have on speed dial is 305-365-4582. Competition will be fierce, but who knows, sometimes life's a beach.

Sagamore Hotel CEO Package, Miami Beach

Sagamore Hotel CEO Package, Miami Beach

From interactive wine lists to loaners in the lobby lounge, iPads are becoming de rigueur in top hotels. Only problem is, those shiny toys aren't yours to keep. Not so at the Sagamore in Miami Beach. Through September 30, the hotel's Chief Entertainment Officer package rewards penthouse stays with more than marble floors, sweeping ocean views, and bragging rights. South Beach CEOs also score a free iPad2 on checkout.

In the stylish suite, accessible by private elevator, crisp white-on-white decor is offset by framed curiosities from the hotel's lauded Cricket Taplin Collection of contemporary art. Three bedrooms and two baths offer enough space for you and five friends, while the whirlpool tub, 42-inch plasma TV, gaming systems, and fully stocked kitchen bar invite partying like it's your job. Being top brass comes with other perks, too: There's executive dining on an 1,800-square-foot terrace, corporate limo (complimentary from the airport), and an expense account (bottle of Moët on arrival, free breakfast buffet, daily beach chairs). Leggy interns? That's on you.

Sagamore CEO package starts at $1,300, two-night minimum. Book via e-mail or phone by May 31.

The Dutch - New York

What do you call a New York City restaurant with classic American grub on the menu helmed by a chef known for his Italian cuisine? The Dutch, a new multi-culti joint in Soho, proves you should never judge a restaurant by its name.

Chef Andrew Carmellini (of Locanda Verde fame) spent a year road-tripping through the States for inspiration, scoping out seafood shacks, taquerías, BBQ joints, and everything in between. The result—dishes like spicy fried chicken with made-to-order biscuits, and pecan duck with Big Easy–worthy dirty rice—is served up under Waffle House–style lighting, along with barrel-aged cocktails and rotating microbrews. Make ours a double, Dutch.
