Washington School House, Park City, Utah

The Washington School House is absolutely stunning.

Oh. You need more? Okay, then. The Washington School House is an iconic historic landmark located in Park City, Utah. Nearing completion of a total interior renovation (think gutted to the studs), this fabulously preserved 1889 limestone gem will reopen in December 2011. The concept? Simple, really. To provide a level of chic sophistication to a discerning traveler that is outside the box. Literally, since our hotel isn’t in a box. It is in a re-purposed, architecturally revered building. This one-of-kind discriminating attitude applies to everything – down to those aforementioned studs. We got lucky. The building is fantastic. We made it a little more fantastic by terracing an outdoor pool/spa into the hillside. And let’s talk about the location. In the heart of historic Park City, basking in mountain-urban swank of remarkable dining, shopping and après-ski all within blocks. The design of the twelve suites and rooms – unrivaled. The finishes? Exceptional. We particularly LOVE the reclaimed oak barn wood floors, locally quarried Utah quartzite, and mountain ice-white marble in the baths. The furnishings you ask? We have curated a collection of European antiques, vintage modern paintings, crystal chandeliers, silver flatware and serving pieces and… took a little time to create a few custom pieces of our own. We might have to pry you out of your room to get you on the mountain. (Don’t worry, it’s an empty threat. We can’t really bring ourselves to leave, either.) We do, however, expect you to relax. And enjoy. Our staff is prepared to exceed your expectations. Our chef has crafted a menu featuring a modern and organic approach to classic American fare. Breakfast is unavoidable. Après-ski fare fireside in our chic ski lounge is nearly mandatory. Our ski valet is at your service. Prepare to be delighted.

Accommodations

Built in 1889 with locally quarried limestone, the Washington School House has been a Park City icon for well over a century. The recent renovation to restore its historical authenticity while re-imagining the stunning interior was a brilliant feat of design savvy. The result? Nothing short of genius. The design team crafted twelve suites and rooms within the original structure, creating space that is truly breathtaking. The team’s vigilant attention to finish detail coupled with the pursuit of all things excellent is a welcome relief. The concept is simple, really. Total luxury. Good taste. A judicious use of color. Exquisite fabrics, fine artwork and a carefully curated collection of antiques. Don’t let the sighs of superb satisfaction and quiet exclamations of “Oh, thank goodness” surprise you. It’s just that perfect.

 Experience

Prepare to be surprised and delighted. The historic building itself is an indulgent retreat. Our carefully curated collections are inspiring. Be overwhelmed in the living room by the 10ft tall antique mirror from an opera house in the south of France and the VERY large antler chandelier – lacquered in white and layered with crystals. And we haven’t even mentioned the views. Or the location – walk out to the town lift, ski in (well, within a few hundred yards). Immerse yourself in Park City history – and our pool, cut into the hillside amid aspens and blue spruce. Enjoy original culinary dishes from our private chef. Luxuriate in your room, piled in white Pratesi linens, down feather bed and pillows. Have a drink in our chic ski lounge. Fireside. Let us wait on you. Don’t get up. Really. We got this.

 Activities

Not that you’re ever going to want to leave us, but in the rare case you must… we have a few ideas. If it’s cold, think snow – as in snow ski, snowboard, snow tube, snowmobile, snowshoe. You can also fly-fish, ice skate, or catch a ride in a sleigh, hot air balloon, helicopter or luge (you know, the usual modes of transportation). If it’s warm – swim, bike, hike. Bobsled, fish, hunt. Golf, run, ride (horse, boat, jet ski, kayak, river raft). There are also big-city caliber museums, galleries, spas, salons, dining and shopping all within walking distance in our awesome little town. Okay, so maybe that was more than a few ideas. We’re not trying to get rid of you. Honestly. Blame Park City for all your options. Or, ignore them all and sit by the fire in the lounge, or in the pool on the back terrace or in your bed with the Pratesi linens. Tough choice, we know.
